Veerangana

Initially a team of 16 women police personnel were trained in Tamil Nadu in the month of April, 2012 on the initiative of the then Director General of Police, Assam Shri Jayanto Narayan Choudhury, IPS. The team was named as Veerangana Unit. The women police constables from various units were trained at BTC, Dergaon under the guidance of Shri B.J. Mahanta, IPS, the then IGP (T&AP), Assam and now ADGP (Railway), Assam. The team display 20 (twenty) events with .303 No. 1 Mark-IV Rifle weighing 4 Kg 127 gms. The Instructors were Ms. Bobby Baishya and Ms. Mandira Chetry. The strength of the Veerangana Unit is 32 (thirty two) women police constables at present. The women police constables have been trained in various aspects like Silent Drill, UAC, Commando Training, Motor Cycle Riding in addition to Law subjects etc. The Veerangana Unit is presently under the command and control of the Commandant, 4th AP Bn, Kahilipara since January, 2015. These women police have been given on the job training and deployed at Police Commisionerate Guwahati to tackle crime against women.


Commando

The Assam Commando Battalion was raised on 18th January / 1996 vide Govt. Notification No.HMA /222/94/115, dtd.18.01.1996, as an elite force which will combat the growing insurgency problem in Assam. The headquarters of the Battalion was first temporarily set up at Kahilipara, in the 4th Assam Police Battalion campus.

The personnel of this unit were initially selected from different Battalions and District Executive Forces of Assam Police and a total of 489 personnel from the rank of Constable to Dy. Superintendent of Police were sent to Commando Training Centre, P.R.T.C, Jahankhelam, Punjab in the last part of the year 1995 for acquiring commando training with sophisticated weapons and advanced tactics for a period of 2 (two) months.

Subsequently, personnel attending training of Police Commando Instructor Course / Police Ranger Commando Course at National Security Guard Training Centre, Maneswar, Haryana, have been inducted to this unit in batches phasing out the senior aged personnel. Also, arrangements were made to train up other personnel in the rank of Inspector, ABSI and Havildars locally by some of the specially trained Instructors at the Bn. Hqrs, Mandakata.

Initially the Commandant, 4th Assam Police Battalion was in-charge of the Battalion from 18.01.1996 to 24.04.1996. The barracks, magazine guard etc. at Mandakata which were initially borne in the books of New Battalion Training Centre (BTC) were formally handed over to the then Commandant of Assam Commando Battalion in the year 1996. All the official branches/ staff and relating goods etc. were shifted from Kahilipara to the present location at Mandakata on 20.11.2000 and since then, the Battalion has been running from Mandakata, North Guwahati under Baihata Chariali P.S.



Mounted Police of Assam

A Mounted Platoon was created in the year 1964 vide Govt. Letter No. HPL 18/63/43 dtd. 16.03.64 at 5th A.P. Bn, Kahilipara, Guwahati with creation of posts on temporary basis. These posts were retained permanently vide Govt. Letter No. HPL 264/70/10 dtd. 01.09.1970. Subsequently, vide Govt. Letter No. HMP. 127/73/13 dtd. 20.08.1973, these posts were re-designated in the same scale of pay and re-named as the MOUNTED POLICE.

When the Headquarters of the 5th A.P. Bn. was shifted to Sontilla, Haflong, the posts and incumbents alongwith horses were transferred to 4th A.P. Bn. vide Govt. Letter. HMP 683/76/15 dtd. 03.10.1980. Horses & Manpower were also sanctioned for training of cadets at the Riding School of the Police Training College, Dergaon.

Object and Purpose

Duties

1. Crowd control, management & dispersal of disorderly mobs during processions, demonstrations, rallies and dharnas.

4. Ceremonial duties or any other duty assigned by the Director General of Police, Assam.
