BRIEF HISTORY

The Assam Commando Battalion was raised on 18th January / 1996 vide Govt. Notification No.HMA /222/94/115, dtd.18.01.1996, as an elite force which will combat the growing insurgency problem in Assam. The headquarters of the Battalion was first temporarily set up at Kahilipara, in the 4th Assam Police Battalion campus.

The personnel of this unit were initially selected from different Battalions and District Executive Forces of Assam Police and a total of 489 personnel from the rank of Constable to Dy. Superintendent of Police were sent to Commando Training Centre, P.R.T.C, Jahankhelam, Punjab in the last part of the year 1995 for acquiring commando training with sophisticated weapons and advanced tactics for a period of 2 (two) months.

Subsequently, personnel attending training of Police Commando Instructor Course / Police Ranger Commando Course at National Security Guard Training Centre, Maneswar, Haryana, have been inducted to this unit in batches phasing out the senior aged personnel. Also, arrangements were made to train up other personnel in the rank of Inspector, ABSI and Havildars locally by some of the specially trained Instructors at the Bn. Hqrs, Mandakata.

Initially the Commandant, 4th Assam Police Battalion was in-charge of the Battalion from 18.01.1996 to 24.04.1996. The barracks, magazine guard etc. at Mandakata which were initially borne in the books of New Battalion Training Centre (BTC) were formally handed over to the then Commandant of Assam Commando Battalion in the year 1996. All the official branches/ staff and relating goods etc. were shifted from Kahilipara to the present location at Mandakata on 20.11.2000 and since then, the Battalion has been running from Mandakata, North Guwahati under Baihata Chariali P.S.

CAMPUS

The surface area of the Battalion comprises of 966 bigha, 1 katha and 10 lessa of land. Another plot of land measuring 1 bigha is located at Phulung village. The topography of the area is mostly hillocks and undulating terrain covered by tropical forest. The relevant records regarding 966 bighas, 1 katha & 10 lessa of the Battalion, which was sanctioned vide Memo No.RSS.732/91(A)/16-1 dtd.25.03.1992 of the Deputy Secretary to the Govt. of Assam Revenue (Settlement) Department & Letter No.KRS/903/91 dtd.29.05.1997 of the Addl. Dy. Commissioner, Kamrup, has already been demarcated by the Circle Officer of Amingaon on 02.09.2003. There is also one bigha of land location at Phulung village which has also been demarcated by the Circle Officer, Amingaon on 02.09.2004.

Out of the 966 bighas of land, a plot of land measuring 300 bighas has been earmarked and allotted to the newly established Counter Insurgency & Jungle Warfare School (CIJW) which is under construction near the Bn. Hqrs. campus.

The Battalion consists of 18 nos. of Assault Groups comprising of the following officers and men who are equipped with Arms & Ammunition mentioned against each and performing operational duties in the state.

The following are the basic training facilities available at this Battalion Campus:-

02. Commando Obstacle Course  32 items.
03. Artificial Rock Climbing Wall 1 No.
04. Driving Training Simulator 1 (4 Lane).
05. Bomb Firing Range     . 1 No.
06. Small Arms Firing Range (Advanced) 1 No.
07. Swimming Training (Ad-hoc)  
 

(Using existing water bodies for the purpose with 2 nos. of Boats.

Although this unit was initially raised for Counter Insurgency Operations Duty in the year 1996, subsequently, the Assam Police Hqrs. has entrusted the job of imparting basic training for the Recruit Constables & Pre Courses of the following nature to the Battalion: -

i. Recruit Basic Training Course.
ii. Pre-Course of Police Commando Instructor Course (PCIC).
iii. Pre-Course of VIP Security Course.
iv. Pre-Course of C.I. Commando Course (CI & CDO).
v. Pre-Course of Counter Insurgency & Jungle Warfare Course (CIJW).
vi. Pre-Course of Un-Armed Combat course (UAC).
vii. Pre-Course of Anti Terrorist & VIP Protection Commando course.
viii. PSO Course.
ix. Weapons & Tactics Course (W&T).
x. Commando Course of other State Police.
xi. Refresher Course of Assault of Commando Bn.
xii. Induction Course of newly joined Commando personnel.
